Sports Physicals in Austin: When and Why Your Child Needs One

It’s that time of year to think about where your children will get a sports physical in the Austin and Round Rock areas during the 2012-2013 school year. The Austin Independent School District requires that all children get a yearly physical after April 15th in order to participate in any AISD Athletics. They recommend that every child make an appointment between May 1st and August 1st, before the 2012-2013 school year begins, but you can still get one if the need arises during the school year. If you’re child hasn’t previously participated in school sports, it could still be a good idea to start thinking about getting a sports physical.  Playing group or individual sports can have great benefits for children, and you don’t want anything holding them back!

Playing sports is, of course, a great way to get your kids to stay active, but the benefits don’t stop there. Here are some more:

Taking your child to see a doctor for a sports physical in Austin or Round Rock before the start of a new school year can ensure that your child is able to do this in a safe and healthy way. Again, though, you may run across the need for a sports physical during the school year, such as scouting or camp trips.

Most organizations are going to at least strongly suggest a sports physical if their activities include anything strenuous.  This protects them, and protects your children as well.  You want to know if there’s anything you should know about your children’s health before they engage in lots of physical activity.

If your child is just beginning to take advantage of the great benefits playing sports can provide, it’s important to remember that you will need to pay extra attention to their health. A big increase in physical activity can lead to changes in their body. While these can definitely be healthy, positive changes, it’s always best to get a sports physical so a doctor can identify any potential risks, and help prevent your child from getting hurt.

Don’t wait until the last minute to get a sports physical in Austin! Avoid the busy time at the end of summer and think about making an appointment for a sports physical today. Of course, if you don’t have time to plan for an appointment, Urgent and Family Care at Avery Ranch offers convenient walk-in sports physicals, performed by our board certified physicians. Make sure your child is prepared today, and they can start focusing on becoming a great athlete tomorrow!
